The Honest Part First
Does Red Light Therapy Work for Back Pain?
Back pain usually has a mechanical cause: a joint that is not moving well, a disc under load, muscles compensating for something else. Light does not fix any of that. What the research suggests red and near-infrared light may do is help with the inflammation and tissue recovery that sit alongside the mechanical problem.
That is why we do not sell the pod as a standalone answer to back pain. At MindBody Med it runs alongside chiropractic care, rehab, massage, and acupuncture, which are the things actually addressing the cause. If red light therapy is not a sensible addition for your situation, our providers will say so.
The Research
What the Research Says About Red Light Therapy for Pain and Inflammation
Stated with the qualification the evidence warrants. Individual experiences vary, and none of this is a guaranteed outcome.
Reducing inflammation
Research suggests red and near-infrared light may help reduce local inflammation. Inflammation is a common driver of back and joint discomfort, which is why it is one of the more studied areas in photobiomodulation.
Musculoskeletal and joint discomfort
Red light therapy has been studied for its potential role in helping manage discomfort associated with inflammatory and musculoskeletal conditions. It is used as a complement to hands-on care, not a replacement for it.
Tissue repair and recovery
The proposed mechanism involves light absorption by mitochondria, which research suggests may support ATP production and tissue repair after injury.
Circulation and blood flow
May support local circulation and oxygen delivery to tissue. Better circulation to an irritated area is part of why the pod is often scheduled around an adjustment.
Where Patients Use It
Red Light Therapy for Lower Back, Neck, Sciatica and Joint Pain
Red light therapy for lower back pain
The most common reason patients ask about the pod. Full-body coverage means the lumbar spine, hips, and glutes are all in the light at once.
Neck and upper back pain
Desk posture, long commutes, and training loads all show up here. Sessions are 15 minutes with no downtime, so they fit around a workday.
Sciatica and radiating leg pain
Discomfort that travels down the leg is usually a nerve irritation issue. Red light is a complement to the chiropractic and rehab work that addresses the cause.
Arthritis and joint pain
Knees, shoulders, and hips. Research on photobiomodulation for joint discomfort is ongoing and results vary between individuals.

MindBody Med is a chiropractic and wellness clinic, not a light-therapy storefront. Every patient who asks about the pod for back discomfort gets an actual assessment first, because the useful question is not whether red light works in general. It is whether it adds anything to the plan that addresses your particular back.
We are listed in the UW Medicine Clinical Referral Directory, and our providers work as a team across chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, and sports rehab. Read more about chiropractic care at MindBody Med or meet the providers.

FAQ
Red Light Therapy for Back Pain: Common Questions
How long does it take for red light therapy to help back pain?
There is no guaranteed timeline, and any clinic that promises one is overselling. Most studies on photobiomodulation for musculoskeletal discomfort run sessions 2 to 3 times per week over several weeks, so that is the schedule most of our patients follow. Some people notice a difference early, others do not, and individual results vary. Your provider will tell you honestly whether it is worth continuing.
Does red light therapy actually work for back pain?
The honest answer is that the research is promising but not conclusive. Red and near-infrared light have been studied for helping reduce local inflammation and helping manage discomfort associated with musculoskeletal conditions. It is not a cure, it does not treat the underlying structural cause, and we do not present it as a substitute for chiropractic care, rehab, or medical treatment. We use it as one tool alongside those.
Is it better than a heating pad?
They work differently. A heating pad warms tissue at the surface. Red and near-infrared light at 660nm and 850nm penetrate further and are absorbed by mitochondria, which is a different mechanism. Neither replaces addressing why your back hurts in the first place.
Can I combine it with a chiropractic adjustment?
Yes, and many patients do. You can book a 15-minute pod session before or after your adjustment in the same visit. Talk to your provider about whether the pairing fits your care plan. See our page on combining chiropractic and red light therapy for how a stacked visit works.
Is red light therapy safe?
Red and near-infrared light are non-invasive and contain no UV radiation. The Prism Light Pod is a medical-grade, FDA-registered device. If you have photosensitivity, take photosensitizing medication, or have a relevant medical history, talk to your doctor before your first session.
Does insurance cover it?
Most insurance plans do not cover red light therapy. Your first session at MindBody Med is free, the intro 6-pack is $149, and memberships bring the per-visit cost down considerably.
